Does Health Insurance Cover Substance Use Disorders?

Yes. In fact, it has to. Since the Affordable Care Act of 2008, insurance companies are now required to cover mental and behavioral health along with physical health care options. But they don’t just have to cover mental health.

They also have to comply with what’s called mental health and substance use parity requirements. That means the law requires insurance companies to cover mental health and substance use at the same level they cover medical needs.

In other words, companies can’t offer robust coverage options to medical needs while only offering limited coverage to mental health needs.

Substance use disorders are considered a complex disease that affects the brain and has an impact on behavioral and mental health. It has an official diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM–5) as a disease, so insurance policies must cover it.

Insurance may help cover the costs of medications, various therapy options, inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment, and other costs associated with treating substance abuse. Your case manager, medical professionals, and therapists will work with your insurance company to get you the coverage you need for the treatment options that are right for you.

Does Aetna Cover Substance Use Disorders?

Yes. Aetna offers fairly robust coverage options for substance use disorder treatment, such as drug and alcohol rehab.

Aetna also boasts a streamlined approval process and 24-hour access to representatives by phone. It covers both inpatient and outpatient treatment options, depending on your specific needs.

In some cases in medical and mental health care, medication or procedures require precertification, which means the insurance provider has to approve of the medication before it can be covered.

However, Aetna doesn’t require precertification for outpatient addiction treatment services. Inpatient services may also be covered with precertification.

The company will look at nationally recognized guidelines for treatment like the ASAM criteria, a set of factors used by treatment centers to help determine your needed level of care.

What Does Your Plan Cover?

Your specific health care plan’s coverage may depend on your particular policy, the state you live in, and the appropriate level of care for your needs. To determine your exact coverage, you can call your Aetna representative.

However, you can also speak to your case manager or intake specialists at Harmony Hills to help determine your eligibility for treatment and the coverage you might receive. At Harmony Hills, we are dedicated to working with your insurance company to help make treatment more affordable and allow you to focus on your recovery.
